Rudy Project Rebel Helmet Review

Rudy Project Rebel 2024

Rudy Project Rebel Helmet Review: New clothing, new shoes and… a new helmet are the best motivation (apart from a new bike) to get out and push the pedals. Our man in Spain, Alastair Hamilton, still has some nice weather to run the Rudy Project Rebel helmet through its paces. It’s not in the aero style, but it has class and most importantly, it’s comfortable.

You can look like a pro – Even if…

Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez: After the last two helmets I have reviewed, it was very nice to receive a ‘normal’ one, I mean not aero. I’ve nothing against aero helmets, and two I did review are top quality and were very comfortable etc. but I felt a bit of fraud wearing them as the speed I ride at these days, a Watt here and there doesn’t make a lot of difference. Plus, maybe wearing an aero helmet sends out signals that you are looking for those little advantage gains over your ride partners, well those days are behind me. If you want an aero helmet, then great, no problem, but maybe not for me.

It looks good

OK, that said what about the Rudy Project Rebel helmet? When I took it out of the box and put it on it fitted, I only had to adjust the rear button, just to tighten it up a little at the back. You could say it was a case of ‘helmet love at first sight’. It fits well and is very comfortable, what more do you want?

There is more to the Rebel than just a nice fit. Mine came with the ‘bugstop’ padding, which stops any biting, stinging beasts getting in and doing something don’t want. The helmet also comes with a set ‘free pads’ without the bugstop. At the front, the pads are attached to a plastic strip, this flexes and gives more comfort for the forehead. There is a lot of padding, more than I’ve seen on other helmets, Rudy is definitely aiming at comfort with the Rebel.

Lots of padding

The rear retention system adjusts tightness around the head, not just at the back. The straps are not too wide, but due to the strap adjusters they sit away from the ears and the chin strap falls in the correct place. The buckle has a magnet which makes clipping easier and there is lever to hold it together. A nice little buckle that works well.

Rudy Project claim the helmet to be 250gr, I know that my scales weigh heavy by 10gr (from bread making), so they are maybe nearer 255gr. Even so, the Rebel feels light on your head and like most good helmets, you forget you have it on after a while. I would imagine that Rudy Project helmets are designed to fit well with their glasses, I tried Oakley, Smith and ekoï glasses and the all fitted well, but it is always better to ‘try before you buy’. And very importantly, the legs of your glasses will slot into the holes at the front of the helmet.

Light enough

So what do I think of the Rudy Project Rebel? As I said it is very comfortable, you could wear it for many hours. Ventilation is good, no over heating and with the bugstop, no unwanted passengers. For me white is always the choice and the black carbon sections gives a great look. It is also available in black and red. The Rebel is well made, lots of padding and has all protection you need and hope never to use. A classy helmet.
