PEZ Holiday Gift Guide #1: Black Friday and Thanksgiving are behind us, so we now turn our eyes to ‘The Holiday Gift Guide’ and the things we would like to receive (and give): Rudy Project Rebel helmet, Enduro Bearings, Roka SR-1x sunglasses, Wahoo launches ELEMNT ACE – A NEW category Defining cycling computer, Life Time Hydrate and Muc-Off launch waterproof drypacks – Gear up for adventure in any conditions.
Rudy Project Rebel Helmet
You can look like a pro – Even if…
Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez: After the last two helmets I have reviewed, it was very nice to receive a ‘normal’ one, I mean not aero. I’ve nothing against aero helmets, and two I did review are top quality and were very comfortable etc. but I felt a bit of fraud wearing them as the speed I ride at these days, a Watt here and there doesn’t make a lot of difference. Plus, maybe wearing an aero helmet sends out signals that you are looking for those little advantage gains over your ride partners, well those days are behind me. If you want an aero helmet, then great, no problem, but maybe not for me.
It looks good
OK, that said what about the Rudy Project Rebel helmet? When I took it out of the box and put it on it fitted, I only had to adjust the rear button, just to tighten it up a little at the back. You could say it was a case of ‘helmet love at first sight’. It fits well and is very comfortable, what more do you want?
There is more to the Rebel than just a nice fit. Mine came with the bugstop padding, which stops any biting, stinging beasts getting in and doing something don’t want. The helmet also comes with a set ‘free pads’ without the bugstop. At the front, the pads are attached to a plastic strip, this flexes and gives more comfort for the forehead. There is a lot of padding, more than I’ve seen on other helmets, Rudy is definitely aiming at comfort with the Rebel.
Lots of padding
The rear retention system adjusts tightness around the head, not just at the back. The straps are not too wide, but due to the strap adjusters they sit away from the ears and the chin strap falls in the correct place. The buckle has a magnet which makes clipping easier and there is lever to hold it together. A nice little buckle that works well.
Rear adjuster hold all round the head
Rudy Project claim the helmet to be 250gr, I know that my scales weigh heavy by 10gr (from bread making), so they are maybe nearer 255gr. Even so, the Rebel feels light on your head and like most good helmets, you forget you have it on after a while. I would imagine that Rudy Project helmets are designed to fit well with their glasses, I tried Oakley, Smith and ekoï glasses and the all fitted well, but it is always better to ‘try before you buy’. And very importantly, the legs of your glasses will slot into the holes at the front of the helmet.
Light enough
So what do I think of the Rudy Project Rebel? As I said it is very comfortable, you could wear it for many hours. Ventilation is good, no over heating and with the bugstop, no unwanted passengers. For me white is always the choice and the black carbon sections gives a great look. It is also available in black and red. The Rebel is well made, lots of padding and has all protection you need and hope never to use. A classy helmet.
Comfort, style and very importantly safety
What Rudy Project say: The Rudy Project Rebel helmet is at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and performance. Designed for the most demanding athletes, it boasts features that elevate it to the pinnacle of products dedicated to head protection and significantly enhance the cyclist’s performance.

Enduro Bearings
Thanksgiving is done and dusted which means Christmas is just around the corner. So to jump start your holiday shopping, here are a few ideas for Enduro Bearings gift options for any mountain biker, gravel rider, roadie, or CX fan; these are easy stocking stuffers and bigger under-the-tree gifts.
New Bearings: Enduro has every shape—well, only one shape—round. They offer a selection of ‘good, better, best’ options, from affordable ABEC 3 and ABEC 5 chromium steel to corrosion-resistant 440C stainless steel to our premium, lifetime-guaranteed XD15 ceramic-hybrid spinners. Upgrade or replace wheel bearings, headsets, suspension pivots, shock pivots, and bottom bracket bearings. A simple replacement can get your bike running smoother and feeling like new again. Prices range from $6.50 to $129 for XD-15.
If you have full suspension, check out their new Black Oxide Solid Lube pivot bearings in 10 common sizes. They come with a new 2-year maintenance-free warranty. Who wouldn’t want to set it and forget it for a couple of years? Price: $49 for all currently available sizes.
Maxhit Headsets and Bottom brackets: A few years ago, Enduro launched a line of Maxhit components, which are machined entirely from 440C stainless steel and ‘guaranteed for life.’ Maxhit eliminates a cup, making the normal outer cup part of the bearing retainer. This allows Maxhit to run bigger balls in deeper grooves. For the rider, this means Maxhit can take more than double the load forces, leading to exponential increases in durability and performance. Headsets start at $119–$139, and Bottom Brackets start at $179–$199.
Tools: Do you like to work on your own bike? If so, you probably appreciate good tools. When replacing bearings, the right tool makes the job much easier and doesn’t damage the bearing or the component you’re putting it back into. The ENDURO Linear Bearing Press ($299) is a great bearing multi-tool capable of pulling bearings from hubs and suspension pivots. Tools range from $30 for a simple bearing puller to $299 for a large bearing press.
Derailleur Pulleys: Directline pulleys are simple upgrades that are plug-and-play, with no need for swapping cages, etc. Pulleys come with XD15 bearings, so you never have to worry about them wearing out. The Teflon-infused Delrin pulleys are machined out of a solid block and are super durable. Each pulley is designed with a specific CN (tight tolerance) for the upper and C4 (floating tolerance) for the lower. Prices range from $119 for older pulleys to $289 for the latest derailleurs.
Chuck Peña PEZ sez: If you need to replace (or just want to upgrade) your bearings, Enduro is about as good they get. I recently decided to replace the headset bearings and the bottom bracket on my trusty Felt FC that has something like 34,000 miles under its belt (both the headset bearings and bottom bracket had been replaced once already).
You don’t have to be a full-bore shop mechanic to do this DIY. But you definitely need all the right tools and it doesn’t hurt to have a little prior experience.
I’m not going to walk you through the whole process, but will share a few pics and some commentary along the way. The first thing to know is that there isn’t complete standardization across the bike industry. In other words, not all headsets — and therefore bearings to fit — are the same. Make sure you know the OEM specs and that you get the EXACT same spec bearings.
Enduro XD15 bearings are as good as it gets. Ceramic hybrid. Enduro claims: “The bearing race is so tough that should grit find its way through our double-lip labyrinth seals to the inside of the bearing, the surfaces will not pit. The grit actually polishes the bearing races smoother.” And they’re guaranteed for life.
Top and bottom headset bearings in place (NOTE: I’m one of those people who believes when it comes to bearings that you can never have too much grease!)
The array of bottom brackets for modern bikes can be a little bewildering. As is the case with your headset, make sure you know exactly what yours is to get the correct replacement bearings. In my case, the Felt FC has a BB30 bottom bracket. But I replaced the original press fit bearings that use external spacers with a sleeved bottom bracket with outboard bearings a long time ago. So I went with Enduro’s XD15 equivalent.
Thread the outboard bearing drive-side cup onto the sleeve
You’ll need some grease and maybe even a light tap with a rubber mallet to get the drive side seated
You’ll need the right bottom bracket external cup tool (almost every bottom bracket has a different notch pattern) and a torque wrench for the non-drive side
Voila!
Roka SR-1x Sunglasses – $210
Designed and optimized for road cyclists and athletes seeking crystal clear optics with enhanced field of view, and a secure, locked-down fit.
The SR-1x offers every athlete the perfect fit courtesy of adjustable titanium core wires. Featuring Patented GEKO technology for unparalleled retention on the roughest of courses, our world-class C3 lenses and lens coatings, and simple lens interchangeability, the SR-1x delivers an enhanced field of view in an uncompromising sport frame for racing and training.
Chuck Peña PEZ sez: By now, everyone knows that oversized, shield style sunglasses are de rigueur in the pro peloton and your local shop ride. If you’re looking something a little less big, the Roka SR-1x may the ‘droids you’re looking for — the lens measures 140 mm wide x 50 mm tall.
The Roka SR-1x comes in eight different colorways (you can also custom build a pair and they can be had with prescription lenses). PEZ got the SR-1x in Gloss White with HC Fusion Mirror Lens.
Starting with the boxing and hardshell case, the Roka Sr-1x has a luxury/high-end feel
Sunglasses for cycling mean wearing them for hours on end — often in hot and humid conditions. That means no matter how stylish or high-tech a pair of sunglasses is, they have to fit comfortably. Out of the box, the SR-1x was “grippy” on my average-ish, Filipino-sized head. I could definitely feel the temples holding them in place. Roka uses titanium core wires that allow the wearer to adjust the temple pieces for a precision fit. I fiddled with them a bit to loosen the pressure but could still feel them gripping (the GEKO elastomer on the nose and temple pads also provides grip). The nose piece felt comfortable enough, but I might try one of the other sizes just to see (feel) if there’s a difference.
The Roka SR-1x comes with three other different size GEKO nose pads to adjust for fit/comfort
The temples also lock in place in the opened and closed positions, so you don’t have to worry about them floppy about. But also a practical/functional aspect if you’re trying to stuff your sunglasses into the vents of your helmet. #marginalgains
Spot on spec weight
Of course, the most important thing in any pair of sunglasses is the optics. In that department, the Roka SR-1x HC Fusion Mirror lens is crystal clear without any distortion (according my aging, Lasik-corrected eyes — I have no way to actually measure). One thing I really like about the SR-1x lens is the way it wraps around to provide peripheral vision coverage, i.e., I couldn’t see the edge of the lens and no stray light leaking in. The lens itself is 17% light transmission, so dark enough for me in full sun yet usable when partly cloudy. YMMV. But not a lens I would choose for a fully cloudy/overcast day. Spare lenses with different tints for different light conditions are available for $70.
The SR-1x lens inserts/locks through the frame, creating a cool little dorsal fin
Almost svelte in comparison to a lot of other oversized sunglasses
If you’re in the market for a premium pair of sunglasses that have fairly substantial lens real estate for sun and wind protection but aren’t straying into ski google-size territory, have a look-see at the Roka SR-1x. They might be just enough to avoid the wrath of our dear friend Ed Hood: “be careful of sizing, if you have a small head and wear huge shades you could stray into ‘Dame Edna’ or ‘Fearless Fly’ territory – neither is icy.”
Speaking of Ed …
Dear Readers – Our beloved colleague and friend Ed Hood suffered a serious stroke in February 2023. We don’t expect Ed will make it back into our bunch, so we started a GoFundMe page to help Ed with his future. Read the full post here – and please consider donating.

Wahoo Launches ELEMNT ACE – A NEW Category Defining Cycling Computer
Brilliantly vivid. Effortlessly intuitive. The all-new ELEMNT ACE is Wahoo’s largest and most powerful bike computer
Wahoo Fitness, the leading fitness technology company for endurance athletes announces an addition to its range with the launch of ELEMNT ACE, a new category-defining cycling computer.
As smartphone technology has constantly evolved and improved over the years, so too have the expectations of consumers. The Wahoo ELEMNT ACE will change the way riders think about cycling computers, meeting the needs of today’s riders, by combining the size and usability of a smartphone, with the fit-for-purpose form factor and features of a bike computer.
- A super-sized, Best-In-Class Screen: that will be largest in category, with best-in-class TFT screen to enable better visibility for navigation and data visualisation
- Up to 30+ hour Battery Life: this will keep riders connected and informed from start to finish
- CATEGORY FIRST – Integrated Wind Sensor: introducing Wahoo Wind Dynamics (WWD) to measure the effects of air resistance in real time and post ride, to quantify how wind and drafting are impacting your ride and measure one of cycling’s most critical forces
- Improved User Experience: new touchscreen to complement buttons for ease of use, plus brand new modern operating system to make it easier than ever to control your ride, and a premium aluminium mount included
- Enhanced Navigation: improved mapping features and turn by turn audio navigation to allow riders to navigate with confidence and ease
- Easier, More intuitive Setup and Sync via the Wahoo App: new cloud-based sync, for a seamless, simple and intuitive user experience where all of a user’s data is stored in Wahoo’s cloud as a single, always backed up source
Enhanced Navigation: When it comes to navigation, modern cycling computers often fall short of consumer expectations set by platforms like Google and Apple Maps, but Wahoo is raising the bar with enhanced navigation capabilities. Drawing inspiration from motoring navigation systems, Wahoo introduces voice turn-by-turn directions to the ELEMNT ACE, reducing reliance on the screen, improving safety and helping riders stay on course at all times. The large screen with high-contrast colour palettes delivers a rich map visual that is easy to quickly interpret while riding. Wahoo also eliminates long-standing frustrations related to loading, searching, and transferring routes, offering a seamless experience via its intuitive touchscreen and the new Wahoo app.
A Best-In-Class Screen: Small screens with low clarity cannot deliver the same experience as a smartphone, which is why ELEMNT ACE will have the largest screen size of any cycling computer on the market. Equipped with a 3.8in, 3:2 aspect screen, the ACE is made with a best-in-class transflective thin-film transistor (TFT) screen. The wider screen aspect ratio allows better peripheral vision on the map when navigating than traditional narrow screens. The high-DPI screen also has excellent anti-glare and anti-reflective properties offering crystal-clear visuals and superb readability in changeable outdoor conditions. The latest in screen technology also offers a near-unlimited colour palette, allowing for optimal background and font colour combinations to also aid in maximising readability.
30+ hour Battery Life: With powerful dual-band GPS tracking, real-time data and up to 30 hours of battery life, ELEMNT ACE is designed to keep riders connected and informed from start to finish.
Category FIRST – Integrated Wind Sensor: Aerodynamics play a critical role in cycling performance, yet until now, quantifying wind impact has been limited to expensive, complex, proprietary devices. For the first time ever Wahoo has incorporated a revolutionary pressure sensor into the ELEMNT ACE via a front-facing opening, enabling cyclists to measure the effects of air resistance in real time. The ELEMENT ACE gives riders real-time insight into their AeroBoost (when groundspeed is aided by tailwinds or drafting) and AeroDrag (when groundspeed is hindered by headwinds). These metrics can guide drafting positioning and quantify the sensation of wind felt by riders. Post-ride, ELEMNT ACE provides Wahoo Wind Dynamics (WWD) to the Wahoo App that can be used to analyse performance and to help understand wind speed and its impacts on performance. With ACE’s integrated wind sensor, Wahoo continues to increase value for consumers by making this crucial data accessible to riders at a reduced cost. This innovative addition opens the door to a whole new world of insights, previously unseen in the cycling computer market.
Extra Info on the Wahoo Wind Dynamics
Wahoo Wind Dynamics: Aerodynamics play a critical role in cycling performance, yet until now, quantifying wind impact has been limited to expensive, complex, proprietary devices. Pitot tube accessories have been around for some time, but adoption has remained extremely low – due to costs and a complicated, overly technical set up. Wahoo is excited to lower this barrier to entry, and deliver a new data point and user friendly experience that democratizes wind data for the masses.
With ELEMNT ACE, Wahoo has introduced a category FIRST with an Integrated Wind Sensor by incorporating a revolutionary pressure sensor via a front-facing opening, enabling cyclists to measure the effects of air resistance in real time. This gives riders real-time insight into their
- AirBoost (when groundspeed is aided by tailwinds or drafting)
- AirDrag (when groundspeed is hindered by headwinds).
These metrics benefit riders with
In Ride Data:
- the ability to guide drafting positioning and quantify the sensation of wind felt by riders.
Post Ride Data: ELEMNT ACE
- provides
Wahoo Wind Dynamics (WWD)
- to the Wahoo App that can be used to analyse performance and to help understand wind speed and its impacts on performance.
Wahoo’s ELEMNT ACE launches on Tuesday 3rd December and Wahoo Wind Dynamics will immediately have the largest real-world wind conditions dataset in the world related to outdoor cycling, which will further enhance our ability to analyze athletic performance in relation to wind.
Wahoo is committed to improving rider experience through regular software updates – much of this is from customer feedback, insights from our close collaboration with the pro peloton, and a company mission to keep improving the functionality of our products. The Wind Sensor is an exciting innovation set to revolutionize your ride experience. This groundbreaking feature will be a major focus for development in the coming years, unlocking new levels of performance and data-driven insights.
Wind Sensor FAQs
- What are the benefits to the rider whilst riding? The aero sensor technology in ELEMNT ACE provides riders with a real-time measurement of the wind forces they are experiencing while riding. While it’s true that a rider can feel the difference in wind, the sensors in ELEMNT ACE objectively quantify this force and record it in real-time for later analysis. Wahoo has also colorized the background to provide an easy, glanceable visual that informs riders if they are in an AirBoost or AirDrag.
- What are the benefits to the rider, post ride? The updated Wahoo app features enhanced post-ride analytics specifically built for wind insights from the ELEMNT ACE aero sensor. We’ve called these insights Wahoo Wind Dynamics. The rider can visualize the percentage of time spent in AirBoost, AirDrag, and neutral air. In addition, they can turn on a map visualization which colorizes their route depending upon the wind conditions for further analysis. We envision continually expanding the range of post-ride analytics over time to keep providing riders deeper insight.
- How has Wahoo validated the data from the Wind Sensor? The ELEMNT ACE aero sensor technology was one of the most resource intensive portions of developing the bike computer, with extensive investments in technical development, user interface design, and technical validation. Wahoo’s Sports and Data Science team conducted comparison benchmark testing versus other similar devices in the market to confirm our initial results. In addition, we constructed a 1 cubic meter miniature wind tunnel at Wahoo HQ which is capable of providing a consistent, laminar airflow. This wind tunnel allowed us to further validate the measured airspeed against both cycling-specific and non-cycling-specific devices. Finally, our analytics teams conducted real-world testing sessions by renting a velodrome in Europe to test the sensor’s accuracy in a controlled setting.
- Does the wind sensor measure CdA or other “traditional aero” metrics? Wahoo is committed to improving rider experience through regular software updates – examples of this in the past include our support for GoPro control, light control, and music control released earlier this year. We plan for this groundbreaking feature to be a major focus for development in the coming years, unlocking new levels of performance and data-driven insights. The hardware capabilities included in the device will support a range of increased functionality in the years to come.
ELEMNT ACE Digital Bike Bell: ACE has an easy to use Digital Bike Bell built into the ELEMNT operating system. Using the built-in speakers, the ACE allows riders to activate a chime while riding. Simply tap the center footer button on any page or double tap anywhere on the main data page to hear it ring. This Digital Bike Bell lets riders communicate seamlessly and safely while staying focused on their ride.
Improved User Experience: Cycling computers are typically tricky to navigate and interact with. Common functions are often nested within complex menu trees and core actions require unnecessary rider inputs. To help combat these common pain points, for the first time in Wahoo’s history the ELEMNT ACE takes advantage of touchscreen technology, but takes it to the next level. The ACE has a responsive screen that works even with non-touch-enabled gloves and in wet conditions too for effortless interaction in diverse terrain and conditions. Physical buttons are still included for added safety and versatility, ensuring riders are offered the best of both worlds. The interface is sleek and intuitive, building on Wahoo’s legacy of making products that are easy to use. Ensuring the ACE remains easy to navigate Wahoo has introduced quick swipe dashboards and streamlined menus that eliminate unnecessary steps, minimising customer inputs and delivering a faster, smoother in-ride experience. Additionally, ELEMNT ACE arrives with a premium aluminium mount, plus tether included, to complete a high value consumer package.
Easier and more Intuitive Setup and Sync via the Wahoo App: ELEMNT ACE will be the first of Wahoo ELEMNT bike computer range to set up and sync via the cloud-based Wahoo App, where the functionality, speed, and utility will be greatly increased. Being cloud-based, this makes for a seamless, simple and intuitive user experience – with changes made in the Wahoo app, will automatically upload to the ELEMNT ACE when in use. In addition, all settings that are stored in the cloud can be used across Wahoo devices for riders with multiple Wahoo bike computers. Leveraging the Wahoo App in this way, riders can enjoy a new, intuitive and streamlined user experience that continues to set Wahoo apart. ELEMNT ACE is the first device in the Wahoo portfolio to support Workout Profiles which enable users to configure unique screens for each type of cycling, such as gravel riding, road riding, and mountain biking. ACE also seamlessly syncs with other Wahoo ecosystem products, including the newly released TRACKR HEART RATE, providing a fully connected and optimised cycling experience.
Gareth Joyce, CEO of Wahoo said “We are thrilled to be launching this next generation of cycling computers and to be setting the standard in what consumers expect. The expectations and demands of our customers have changed dramatically since our first bike computer launched back in 2015. Our rider-centric approach to the development of the ELEMNT ACE ensures that it’s a cycling computer that stands up to the expectations of the modern cyclist. This is a huge development and a step forward for the bike computer category.”

Life Time Hydrate
Life’s intense, and so are your workouts. But guess what? Sweating, stressing, sipping on that cup of Joe: it all leads to dehydration drama – muscle cramps, fatigue, and the eternal struggle against cravings. But fear not, our Lemon Lime, Peach Mango and Blood Orange-flavored elixir is here to rescue you from the thirst.
Why choose Hydrate?
- No added sugar, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, or allulose
- Free from gluten, dairy, and GMOs
- Independently 3rd party tested and NSF contents certified for purity and potency
Chuck Peña PEZ sez: Even if colder weather is keeping you from riding outdoors (I readily admit that I’m a wimp in my old age when it comes to riding in the cold), you still need to hydrate if you’re riding indoors (perhaps even more so). Life Time Hydrate (which can be purchased either as a 60 serving jar or 15 count single-serving packs) is the latest hydration product I’ve had the opportunity to try. Is it better than other such products? I can’t attest to that because I have no way to objectively measure and compare. But IMHO, a sports hydration product is better (as in more beneficial) than plain water (although water is better than nothing). And a product like Life Time Hyrdrate is probably better (again, as in more beneficial) than the typical sports drinks you can find on grocery and convenience store shelves/refrigerators.
Do I like Life time Hydrate? In a word … YES. PEZ got the single serving packets and I find those more convenient than having to measure scoops out of a jar. Life time recommends “one packet in 12 to 16 oz. of water to support healthy hydration and fluid replenishment,” but I use them in my Camelbak Podium water bottles that are 21 oz/620 ml without the flavor being diluted (some other products I’ve tried seem to lose a little flavor because my water bottles are larger capacity than the recommended mix). I’m one of those riders who needs flavor in my sports drink, i.e., some sweetness. Life Time Hydration provides that but without added sugar, which is a plus in my book.
Speaking of flavor … I knew I would like Lemon Lime and Blood Orange because both are flavors I’m very familiar/experienced with (and would be difficult to get wrong). But I wasn’t so sure about Peach Mango. Not that I don’t like them, but neither peaches nor mangoes are part of my regular diet. And mixing them together was uncharted territory for me. But I was pleasantly surprised by how they tasted together. Of course, YMMV.
