A Tour For Old Men ?
The two massive favorites for the TDF 25 title are of course Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard and interestingly their teams UAE and Visma are 2 of only 3 teams at this year’s race who have chosen experience over youth with no riders in their teams being eligible for the best young rider’s category (26 years old or younger on January 1).

The other ‘experienced’ team are Cofidis who are desperate for UCI points in their race to stay in the World Tour next year and have chosen a team based solely on stage hunters but can they do it ? Bryan Coquard is there for the sprints but against big name sprinters like Tim Merlier, Jasper Philipsen & Jonathan Milan to name just three I see him getting top 5s at best.

TDU 2025

In his seven attempts at the Tour de France Coquard is yet to score a stage win despite some close calls and numerous top 10s. Eighth time lucky?

An English Speaking Tour!
Another interesting statistic from this year’s startlist are the English speakers in the race. No, I’m not talking about the guys that can get by in English – I’m talking about the Brits, the Americans, the Aussies and the like. Native English speakers are very well represented this year with there being :

10 Australians
9 British
5 Americans
2 Canadians*
2 Irish
1 New Zealander

So a grand total of 28 native English speakers this year (one of the Canadians is a French native speaker – Guillaume Bovin) which looks very big indeed in comparison to a traditional cycling nation like Italy which has just 11 riders this year. Go back 30 years to the 1995 Tour and Italy had 37 in the race and native speaking English riders totaled just 10 with 2 Aussies, 3 Americans, 3 Brits, 1 Kiwi and 1 Canadian. Cycling has certainly changed a lot.

Things sure looked different back in ’95…

Special Jerseys at Le Tour
Tour time often coincides with special jersey time as numerous teams change their usual season gear for something unique for the lap of France. Marketing gimmick, hot weather reasons or forced to change due to clashes with the official jerseys (here’s looking at you Yellow jerseyed Visma) this year a few teams have already announced their new look.

Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe
For the first time in years, every stage of the Tour de France will take place entirely within France and to mark this special edition, Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe and Specialized have unveiled a limited-edition kit inspired by the French Tricolore (red, white & blue) and legendary French World Cup jerseys. It’s a visual tribute to the soul of the Tour de France.

Visma-Lease A Bike have also unveiled another new look for this year’s Tour de France and they named it ‘the swarm’.
To avoid a clash with the famous yellow jersey of the men’s Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes, the Dutch squad have been forced to come up with alternate kits and this time around, the team will wear jerseys featuring thick black and yellow stripes akin to those of a bumblebee.

As has been the case previously during the 2025 season, the kit is manufactured in-house by Visma-Lease A Bike, featuring their ‘Yellow B’ brand logo. Team sponsors and suppliers Visma, Lease A Bike, Cervélo, Sram, and Nimbl all feature on the kit plus their new ‘old’ sponsor, Rabobank.

Pogi and friends over at UAE Team Emirates – XRG will also be riding around France in a slightly new look with their Pissei designed special-edition kit featuring a little more white than black in expectations of the hot temperatures forecast for July.

Extreme Heat Preparation
UnoX rider Tobias Johannessen has been taking his heat preparation to the extreme as he tuned up his feelings this week before his 3rd Tour de France by riding around his native Norway wrapped in 5 layers of jackets plus a layer of plastic garbage bags and a shower cap!

With 40 degree temperatures (104f) across France at the moment he upped the feelings of his 25 degree Celsius (77) ride significantly by training in his multi layered set up. Will this low-tech extreme approach work ? UnoX are coming in to Le Tour promising attacking racing and Johannessen is a key part of those plans and is looking at building on his 30th and 35th GC finishes from the past 2 years.

More Jersey News!
Apart from their special Tour de France jersey, Team Visma | Lease a Bike have also just unveiled a new regular jersey for the rest of the season. The updated kit will be worn throughout the season by all male and female riders of the team with the exception of ‘the swarm’ in the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes. Rabobank also features on the new jersey.

Jasper Saeijs, Chief Business Officer at Team Visma | Lease a Bike, is proud of the updated kit: “This kit is the face of our team. Day in, day out, it’s seen in races all over the world, both on and off the road. We are proud of the renewed design: it evolves alongside our team, while staying true to who we are. July 1 marks a new chapter for us and we are proud to welcome Rabobank back on our jersey from this moment on. We’re excited to showcase our new kit in the peloton.”

The jersey will make its racing debut on Sunday 6 July, when the Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women riders line up for the start of the Giro d’Italia Women. With this new kit, Rabobank – previously announced as a new sponsor – will also become visible on the Team Visma | Lease a Bike kit starting 1 July.

Giro D’Italia Women 2025
We’re spoiled for choice with high quality racing in July with the women heading to Italy for the Giro that starts this Sunday. After their thrilling showdown in 2024—when they were neck and neck until the final 2 km of the last stage—Elisa Longo Borghini and Lotte Kopecky return as two of the top contenders for the Maglia Rosa.

Giro 2024

However, much has changed since last year. The Italian star has left Lidl-Trek after six seasons to join UAE Team ADQ, while the World Champion will now share leadership duties at SD Worx with Anna van der Breggen, a four-time Giro winner making her racing comeback after a three-year retirement.

Several other top-10 finishers from the 2024 edition are also on the entry list: Paulina Rooijakkers (4th), Juliette Labous (5th), Antonia Niedermaier (6th), Gaia Realini (7th), and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (8th). There’s growing anticipation around Marlen Reusser, fresh off her Tour de Suisse Women victory and second place at La Vuelta Femenina plus a few potential dark horses including Monica Trinca Colonel, Evita Muzic, Yara Kastelijn, and Barbara Malcotti. It should make for a great race. (6th – 13th July)

‘Take a Breath!’: Jorgenson extends stay with Team Visma | Lease a Bike
More Visma Lease a Bike news now with the team announcing that Matteo Jorgenson will stay with the Dutch squad to at least 2029. The two-time overall winner of Paris-Nice sees the Dutch WorldTeam as the best environment to take the next step in his career. “I felt at home here straight away and I don’t see any other team where I can work with the same trust and calmness as I do here.”

The 25-year-old American is only in his second season with Team Visma | Lease a Bike, but he has clearly found his place within the team. “The mentality within the team matches mine and so does the way of working”, said Jorgenson. “For a rider like me, who pays a lot of attention to small details, it’s really important to work in an environment where you can trust everyone around you. I’ve found that here, with the coaches, sports directors, food coaches, management, and all the other specialists. They look at the details even more closely than I ever could, which allows me to focus fully on my job: training and racing.”

Paris-Nice

That match quickly paid off, with an overall victory in Paris-Nice, a win in Dwars door Vlaanderen, a second place in the Critérium du Dauphiné, and an eighth-place finish in the Tour de France. This season, Jorgenson added a second Paris-Nice title. “Winning Paris-Nice twice was something I never thought was possible before I joined this team. It has changed my goals and ambitions and allowed me to dream bigger.”

Jorgenson will pursue those bigger dreams at Team Visma | Lease a Bike for at least the next four years. “Even though he was still under contract, it was our priority to secure Matteo for the long term,” explained Grischa Niermann, Head of Racing. “Matteo is a very important rider for us in both the Grand Tours and the Classics. We have big plans with him, and we’re happy he has committed his future to us.”

Jorgenson himself is equally enthusiastic about the extended stay. “I felt at home here from the start and don’t see any other team where I can work with the same trust and calmness. Honestly, it felt like an easy decision. I’ve set ambitious goals for the next four years and want to make this the peak of my career. I’m happy I can pursue those goals in this environment.”

La Vuelta’s Official Song!
We’ll finish EuroTrash today on a musical note as Unipublic and Antonio Orozco have presented the official video of Te estaba esperando, the official song of La Vuelta 25.

The Espacio ABC in Madrid hosted the presentation of the official video of La Vuelta 25 this Wednesday in the presence of Antonio Orozco, the singer of Te estaba esperando and Javier Guillén, General Director of La Vuelta.

La Vuelta will once again take off from abroad in 2025, this time from Piedmont, Italy. The race celebrates its 90th anniversary with an edition that will travel to four countries (Italy, France, Andorra and Spain) on its way to the traditional finale in Madrid’s city centre.

Te estaba esperando is an emotionally-charged story that speaks of waiting as a form of love. Antonio Orozco resumes the narrative thread that he began with Te juro que no hay un segundo que no piense en ti, the first release of his latest album El Tiempo No es Oro. In this new release, the protagonist represents his daughter in the future, a symbolic way of showing the passage of time and everything that remains behind despite it. The song and music video accompany this year’s official La Vuelta video, offering an intimate and moving look that connects with the spirit of the race: stages are overcome and finish-lines crossed. Because, in the end, what matters is not just the arrival, but all the emotion we experience along the way.

The official song of La Vuelta is already an inseparable emblem of the race, with a history spanning over 45 years, combining music and cycling. Since Sheila & B. Devotion set the rhythm of the very first edition with Singing in the Rain back in 1977, numerous artists, both national and international, have accompanied the different editions with their music, turning each year into a soundtrack dedicated to sports and emotion.

Are you a fan of cycling races having ‘official’ songs? The Giro and the Vuelta both have a long history of these but Le Tour generally steers clear of it…

and then there are individual riders like ‘The Gorilla’ André Greipel who would often get involved in his own ‘unofficial’ Tour songs that were generally pretty embarassing but you’d never dare say it to his face!
